Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has resigned, saying he accepted responsibility for clashes between police and protesters that have left at least 69 people injured, some seriously.
Chavalit is a former prime minister who was appointed to mediate with the anti-government protesters. On Tuesday, police fired fresh rounds of tear gas at anti-government demonstrators gathered in the Thai capital's historic district to force them to disperse. About 4,500 police have been facing off in several locations against thousands of supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy, who have rallied since late May, demanding that the government step down.
