Among the leaders attending the funeral is Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, whom Mwanawasa often criticised for his authoritarian rule. Zimbabwean state radio has quoted Mugabe as praising Mwanawasa's courage and frankness. The late president was dubbed "Mr Integrity" for his firm stance on corruption.
