German armed forces say three Afghan civilians killed at a checkpoint were probably shot by German troops.
The German army is investigating the incident, in which three civilians were shot dead in northern Afghanistan on Thursday when they failed to stop at a checkpoint manned by ISAF soldiers and Afghan police. Initially it was not clear whether it was the German ISAF soldiers who opened fire on the approaching vehicles. Around 3,500 German troops are stationed in Afghanistan, mostly in the north, as part of the so-called International Security Assistance Force.
