US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has called for an immediate increase of US troops in Afghanistan, saying conditions there were precarious and urgent.
Obama met Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul, where they discussed terrorism, corruption and Afghanistan's narcotics trade. An Afghan official said Obama had pledged to stand beside Afghanistan and vowed to vigourously pursue the war on terror if he becomes President. Obama has previously said he would deploy an extra 10,000 US troops to Afghanistan while downscaling US forces in Iraq. Meanwhile Obama has arrived in Kuwait and met the Gulf Arab state's emir.
